Inaugural Tuesday Update: Wolverine Edition

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

[iVolunteer's project team meets every Tuesday at 6:00 pm at the Van Heyst Group's offices on 719 Walnut Street in Boulder, and they never ask for a plug, but here's one anyway: PLUG! Find out all about Time's 100 most influential people of the year from right there. Should Sarah Palin be on the list? You could argue that she was influential enough to get Barack elected, so I say "yes."]

Have you ever wondered what happens at iVolunteer working sessions (who am I kidding, of course you have) or have you ever wondered what kind of people we need to get involved? This should give you all of that and more. So much more.

First thing’s first. Right now, stop what you’re reading, and tweet Hugh Jackman. You read that right. Mr. Wolverine himself is offering up $100,000 (Australian dollars, but still good) for the charity that best sells its cause to him in 140 characters on Twitter. He’s announcing the winner on April 24th on Ryan Seacrest’s morning show (which I suppose means that such a thing exists), so you have at least that long to try for iVolunteer. I have seen that book charities have the upperhand, because someone has offered to match any book charity contribution 50%. Which means our best shot is pure volume of tweet love. Let him know that iVolunteer deserves $100,000 Aussie dollars a helluva lot more than a book charity needs $150,000 Aussie dollars – in 140 chars.

Something we’re hearing about that needs to be clarified is how to donate to iVolunteer. Right now, you can click on the blue link right over to our right that says “Network for Good,” just make sure to type “iVolunteer” into the “Designation” field. Otherwise, you can write a check out to “iVolunteer” and give it to Dave or Rich (findable through Twitter quite easily) or the Community Foundation itself (findable here during office hours). Alternatively, you can donate beer and/or food to the team as we work on Tuesdays at Van Heyst. That’s definitely always welcome, and we’ll be happy to sing your praises all the live-long day for having done so.

The news of the day is that we are finally coalescing into some kind of generally productive unit! Dave beamed like a proud daddy about the development team, so this means that all new volunteers (we still definitely need help for both iPhone and Facebook development) will have very clear actions to take if you were to want to participate. The current set of volunteers is absolutely stoked on being able to broaden their development skillset and the kind of mentorship they can get. Geeks gettin’ geekier. We love it.

On the non-geek side, iVolunteer would like to welcome Mark Haag (spelling correction to come, I’m sure) to the BizDev Squad. He brings a TON of experience, and we’re stoked to have him aboard. Of course, our roster is rotating and includes some that can’t necessarily make it to meetings, but if you consider yourself a non-geek (or if you are a geek but would like a break from your geekiness to live less geeky for a minute) then you can join iVolunteer and work with other top-notch managers. I learn something every day I go.

Thanks to everyone who attended for coming by and helping out. Next week, we’re going to get a good look at a PR plan, so if any PR pros in the area would like to contribute, we’d love to get your input! Please stay tuned for meeting details or join the iVolunteer Facebook group for all future announcements on upcoming working sessions.

iVolunteer iPhone Teaser

Friday, April 17th, 2009

The crew working on the iVolunteer iPhone app have been hard at work!

We originally wanted to show this demo video during our presentation to the Boulder Denver New Tech Meetup, but had a bit of laptop trouble and had to switch things out at the last minute.

It was definitely worth the wait. Kudos to the iPhone team!

Check out the video (btw, it looks awesome in full screen mode) and leave us a note in the comments to let us know what you think.

iVolunteer Presenting at BDNT!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

We’re excited to announce that iVolunteer will be presenting at the Boulder Denver New Tech Meetup on Tuesday, April 7th. A lot of great people did an enormous amount of work to get us to this point and we’re excited to finally start showing what we’ve done.
If you can’t make it to the live show, check back here in a few days and we’ll have a link to a video of our presentation.

Wish us luck!
