Volunteering for Volunteering Application

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

SnapImpactI was at a Rally Software seminar a couple of months ago, learning what I could about Agile and Scrum.  Those of us in job search mode know that these are big buzz words in the software development industry.  Learning is great, but I wanted to put this new found knowledge to good use…

I was eating lunch with a group at the Rally Software conference that told me about the SnapImpact  iPhone app, developed by a bunch of volunteers.  I quickly whipped out my iPhone and downloaded the application aimed at recruiting volunteers for non-profit opportunities.  I plugged in my zipcode and voila!  Volunteer opportunities galore filled my screen!

I scrolled through the list looking for some volunteer opportunity that would help me hone my Software Development and QA Agile skills.  “Why don’t you join us at SnapImpact?” asked my lunch companions. “We meet in Boulder, 6-9 on Wednesday nights.”

So I started my new “job” at SnapImpact.  I showed up and recognized familiar faces that I’d seen at the prestigious Boulder Tech Meetup Group and in  Boulder “cool” Twitter circles. (Yes, Twitterers can be very cool.)  This is one group of very energized geeks! As I write, there are beers, pizzas, and laptops littering the table.  Techies are brainstorming, coding, and testing, with the occasional tweet. These are the new coders. They’re fast. They’re cool. They’re agile…

Plans are being made for enhancements to the All For Good site.  Momentum is building for volunteerism and on December 2nd we’ll be meeting with Roman Krafczyk, Executive Director of the Volunteer Connection to get his perspective and inputs.
