Help Us Make Doing Good Easy

iVolunteer is a guerrilla, open-source, nonprofit startup with the goal of using tech to make doing good easy. We started out with the idea of building an iPhone app that would show you places to volunteer nearby and have since added a FaceBook app, a WordPress plugin, and the ActionFeed.org website.

There are no employees, no office, no budget, and – since everything is being given away – there’s no profit motive. We put the idea out to the Boulder tech community and have been amazed and grateful at how many people have shown up, excited to work on something challenging with good people.

As a community project, we think it’s important to keep folks in the loop. To that end, we’re gearing up for a preso at the April 7th Boulder Denver New Tech Meetup. While we’re hoping to give a good show, we’d absolutely love to get more folks involved before then.

Think it’s a good idea and wanna help out? Here’s where we need additional resources:

- UI Design (website and iPhone app)
- Java Server
- Tech Writing
- Testing
- iPhone Development
- FaceBook Development

If you’re interested in getting involved, you can drop us a line at ivolunteer AT actionfeed DOT org, ping us on twitter or just show up for the quick meeting we’ll be holding immediately following tonight’s Boulder Denver New Tech Meetup.

Our strategy has been to try and keep the barrier to entry very low for the groups we’re trying to help find volunteers. To that end, we decided to start by collecting data from aggregators – organizations like Hands on Network which collect and publish event data from a multitude of organizations. That way, individual nonprofits won’t have to do anything for their events to show up in our system. If you’re already publishing to Hands on Network, you’re already covered!

If not, perhaps you can help us solve this part of the challenge. First, we’re still trying to line up additional aggregators. If you input your events with any of these services, which one(s)? If you have contacts there, we’d love an introduction. The other way you can help us is to give us your thoughts on how individual groups could most efficiently get their events into our system.
